We count with complex numbers (far better name for what they are).
We just use the zero number on the complex scale. Since all numbers are complex numbers.

1 "normal" = 1+0i, and is complex. Unless you need to represent more complex things than counting it's fairly unnecessary (and time consuming) to use the complex set.
