They can. I mean many musical instruments work with hammers of various sizes.

But sledgehammers are poor in making sound without hitting something. And far less intimidating than the hard hitting and fast whip.

That evasive action is something I've always found funny. Since when they do it, it -never- works. Especially as you got spaceships with scanners, targeting sensors and ammo that's smarter than you....how could they not hit?

Luck, you might only have a 0.01% chance to succeed, but it's still going to be better then doing nothing. Perhaps you're just making it hit the medbay rather then causing a catastrophic reactor meltdown.

They should rather have some tech to make their shields and alike better. Shield/protect their more vulnerable sections less so. Like disrupting the enemy sensors so they will hit the medbay instead of the reactor.
