If Warcraft started out as Warhammer then thank the gods that it changed into something else. I will welcome Death Knights into the tribe provided that they are actually orcs. I do not think that they will break the established lore, but rather show that WoW is a setting where things actually change and evolve over time. These new Death Knight will be something that has never existed before, but how many of us have complained in the past about static worlds where nothing ever happens?
I for one, will not be tempted away from WoW by WAR. I won't repeat here the reasonsn why I dislike Warhammer so much but the fact thyat I will not be playing WAR will come as no surprise to many people. Infact my enforced 2 month exile from WoW has only made me realise how much I miss playing this game. No other MMO I have tried has been as well crafted as WoW. The controls are incredibly intuitive and it manages to create a real sense that you are controling a character which has a real physical presence in the world (even if you can run through other people). No other game has acheived this as well as WoW and I can totally understand why it is the biggest MMO out there.
I did think, before its release, that I could be tempted away by Middle Earth Online. However that game proved to be as disappointingly clunky as other MMO's I've played in the past. You never fealt that you actually were your character or that your character had any real physical existance. The next batch of MMO's on the horizon may well prove to be just as disappointing so I refuse to get excited about any of them until I actually have a go at playing them.
Of course WoW has its faults, mainly its painfully silly bits. The game which does finally lure me away will be a game which is as playable as WoW and also has a world which takes itself entirely seriously. I long for a game with no comedy goblins, steam tanks and npc's with (not very) amusing names. Right now the only possible contender is Age of Conan. It remains to be seen whether AoC delivers on the gameplay front. Until then I fully expect to still be playing WoW until well after the next expansion and beyond.
