I understand why the ending of the TV series happened since they ran out of budget, and I thought End of Evangelion was great... Right up until the last act. It became so stupidly abstract and artsy and I really dislike that kind of thing.

Exactly that. I'd have prefered a less metaphysical ending. And a more physical one. Kinda left a bad taste in my mouth, and I usually am not opposed to storywise bad endings. Still I prefer the new movies.

Watched half of the first one there, the new VAs for some of the characters are very jarring, especially Kensuke since I was so used to him having a voice that was breaking in the original.
