Title: Swearing
Post by: Claws on January 07, 2008, 12:25:35 PM
This has been brought up before but just a reminder to the newer members who may not be aware of it.

Swearing will not be tolerated on the open Chat.
That being Guild Chat, Say, Yell or Raid.
Do not show your ignorance by doing it.
You may think that the word you are using is mild but to others it may not be so.
If you cannot talk with out swearing then say nothing or do what others do compromise with an alterative word.
What you say in whisper is up to you as an individual as long as it does not offend the recipient of the whisper.
Remember there are younger people on the servers lets not drag ourselves down.

For reasons I have explained to Claws on the officer forums, I have decided to unlock this post.

Let me say that I fully back Claws's right ask people not to swear. We as a community must always bear in mind that there are people who may be offended by what we say. However I also believe that there are times when a small number of people may be offended by something which the majority of people find perfectly acceptable.

It is always a question of understanding and tolerence of others. I do think that people should have the right to reply to this post, either to agree with it or but a reasonable case against. However, if this decends into flaming or insulting anyone who chooses to post in this topic, then I will take action against the offenders.

Moved to OOC forum so we don't have this plastered over our frontpage.

My point of view regarding swearing is that a lot of swearwords are culturally based. Swearing about religion or deities is normal in Scandinavia, swearing about sex is normal in other countries, and so on and so forth.

Now, what do we know about orcish culture and what swearwords would orcs use? I'm pretty convinced that orcs wouldn't use our regular swearwords, as the orcish culture is rather different from ours.

My belief is that swearwords could revolve around ancestors, demons, Thrall and other major orcs, honour, and so on.

For the love of Thrall! - when you get exasperated
Grom'damnit! - angry exclamation
You son of an ogre! - when someone acts stupid or you want to insult someone

My suggestion is that we make dictionary on orcish swearwords that we can use IC. It would definitely enhance the arrpee and make us look good in the community.

Welcome back Reh!

I for one like the idea.

Either that or bolderise the more... popular expletive.

A dictionary of orcish insults and cursing on our front page? Sounds like a great way to advertise the guild! ;D

In any case, I got a whole page of orcish insults. I'll happily contribute, hehe.

Let's face it people, swearing is an absolute minefield with what one person finding very offensive another finding perfectly acceptable. So let's take a constructive approach here and turn this into a suggest orcish swearing thread.

If we can compile a list then we can swear IC without anyone being offended IRL.

Some you'll regularly might see Koz use:
Flowers in the blood (or most of the time: Flower-blood, aka elf or pansy);
You’re ugly and your mother dresses you! (while this may be true for most orcs, I doubt it's anything to be proud of!);
Son of snakes! (decide for yourself);
Listen to my laughter! (when mocking someone);
Your head is empty (true in most cases as well, but still ;));
Grom-damn! (popular one, I know);
Possum(-spit) (one of Koz's favourites).

Also, some random insults I picked up back in my dwarvish RPing days. Some of them are actually quite good for orcs too. (<...> is where you just insert a random word like orc or coward or whatnot)
Fossil;
Troll-barf;
Gnome's-armpit;
Poetry-reading <...>;
Axe-breaking <...>;
Elf-kissing <...>;
Tool-snatching <...>;
Clanless <...>;
Drooling <...>;
Incompetent <...>.

That should be plenty for you Poetry-reading possums for now! Go do your homework and come back like the rude orc you are!

Disclaimer: Anyone found using these insults against yours truly will be decapitated on sight. ;>

I agree with this entirely, though I must admit I am guilty for using the occasional expletive in redorc, though it's never bad ones (in my opinon anyway).

Love the idea of a list of orcish swearwords and cursing, like alot of people it seems, I use Grom-damned and so on for IC cursing. So much better, more fun and less offensive then actual swearwords. Makes the world seem a bit more 'real' I suppose, because in RL differant groups have differant swearwords and insults, so why not our orcs?

There's always the swearwords from Inventing Swearwords 1-3, but methinks I'll stick with the more "orcy" ones.

Totally offtopic, but chance are I'll be in game tomorrow for a while, since I'm going home to Manchester for a few days as I need a computer and can't be bothered with the library all the time.

I wonder if with the coming of the death knights, shouldn't we try to see what can they add to swearings :)

I'm out of ideas for the moment, but I'll come back to it. Bump meanwhile, please take it over with ideas!
Please check also the wiki page where I have compiled all that is listed here or elsewhere in the forums on this matter:

I think Karak served as a perfect example to orcs in the past on what orcs can consider bad in their society.

On a side note, your sig is an incredibly amount of win.
